The process of converting audio speech content into written content. Generally, transcription task can be performed in various formats accordingly. That enrichs the accessability to winder range of audiences, and creates a better user experience.

Transcription can be categorized according to the cost, time, and the quality output.

  • Manual Transcription: performed manually by a human effort. It might take a longer tunaround time, however the accuracy level is mostly higher if an additonal proofreading or QC stage is perhaps added.

  • Automated Transcription: performed using a specialized online or offline Text to Speech software, the human involvment might not be involved, and the output is basically faster than the human transcription.

Here, we present major transcribtion styles:

  • With time-codes: where the trascribed material is annotated to indicate the time-code according to the source. This process is the most common for the purpose of sequence subtitling, dubbing, or closed captions (CC) stage.

  • Without time-codes: when there is no demand for time-stamp and the transcribed material is for different purposes.

Subtitling Translation

The word subtitling doesn't indicate a casual "translation" job. That is a great misconception. The subtitling process is considered as a specialized operation.

Sometimes subtitling translation and creation is performed when the screenplay text is available or transcibed. And in recent days, some major playes and media producers developed their own subtitling environments and tools. Such as Netflix, SDI Media and many more.

Well, the classic subtitling process included basic workflow items:

  • Script preperation: Either transcribed from available media, or provided by the media producer.

  • Time-coding: If the time-code is not prepared during the transcription stage, it has to be inserted during the subtitling creation.

  • Target format: when the subtitling translation is completed, along with the time-codes. The most common is .SRT format. However, some tools in the market support different subtitling files format.
